Plot

Weyland-Yutani sends the Weyland-Yutani space probe to investigate USCSS Nostromo debris, that was destroyed 20 years before in 2142. The parasite cocoons the probe and flies off to a hidden research space station. When the expedition lands, a group of masked scientists force open the cocoon to reveal that it contains one of those alien xenomorphs that slaughtered most (but not all) crew members on the Nostromo.

They discover samples of a compound named Z-01 (which Rook, also Decker at one moment in the series interchangeably calls “Prometheus fire”), which had been harvested from xenomorphs killed by scientists and mixed with human DNA to create new “perfected” humans. Rook demands that the samples be returned to Jackson’s Star and prevents the Corbelan from leaving without them. Andy refuses Rain and Tyler permission to use their rifles against the Xenomorphs, since it would splash its blood on the station’s hull — and that would set off an explosion from explosive decompression.

Getting to the station and into a nest, Rain recovers Kay from an infant but Tyler is murdered and Andy harm. During their escape, Kay is badly wounded and injects herself with Z-01 as well. Rain then returns to Andy and takes away Rook’s Control chip, freeing him. Rain turns off the gravity of the station, allowing her to shoot all other xenomorphs without getting acid on them and presumably weakening/destroying a portion of its hull. The station crashes into the rings as Rain and Andy manage to elude on the Corbelan, leaving Rook along with the last xenos aboard The Renaissance.

Rain and Andy are preparing to go over the border when Kay gives birth to a cocoon containing an embryonic human/xenomorph hybrid (mutated from Z-01) that quickly matures. The hybrid then incapacitates Andy and kills Kay, but Rain is able to get the creature back into rings of LV-410 where it gets sucked out. After she writes an audio log about them arriving at Yvaga : Andy in his Cryostasis chamber and herself, entering the cryopod.

Daniel Betts voices Rook, the android science officer of Romulus and a visual homage to Ian Holm’s portrayal of Ash in Alien. Holm’s estate had to give permission for Rook, crafted by effects company Legacy Effects who were responsible animatronic head and torso made using a live-action essence of Holm that was scanned during filming on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. The computer-generated imagery (CGI) company Metaphysic manipulated the Venus character with deepfake AI technology, aligning her lips to match spoken lines, adjusting its nose and eyes in certain shots. Betts’ dialogue was then filtered using Speechre, based on the original Alien’s Ash.

Trevor Newlin portrays the xenomorph, with Romanian former basketball player Robert Bobroczkyi appearing as the human-xenomorph hybrid (credited only as The Offspring). Production

Development: With the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, following a former endorsement at CinemaCon as part of its announcement for future films in development revealing back would be more Alien movies. A seventh Alien film (set to be released on Hulu) written and directed by Fede Álvarez was announced in March 2022, after he pitched his own story described as “unconnected” to the prior films of the franchise. Filming

The film was shot in Budapest at locations such as a functioning power plant and filmed on location from March 9 to July 3, 2023. Production designer Naaman Marshall sought to reimagine the Alien universe while paying homage to franchise’s roots — specifically, the first two movies in that series.

The Romulus portion of the Renaissance space station was meant to feel a bit like set design from Alien and video games such as Alien: Isolation, but executed in homage to old Ron Cobb alien concept art with hints towards heavy-lift machinery and vehicles. Post-production

Industrial Light and Magic, Fin Design, Image Engine, Wētā FX or Wetadigital, Tippett Studio… comprised the computer-generated imagery for the film; with further contributions from Atomic Arts,Wylie Co., Metaphysic.

Miniature effects for the film was created by visual effects artist Ian Hunter, including the Corbelan IV spaceship and the WeylandYutani Echo probe. Those effects would then be either directly filmed, or scanned into a computer for CGI modeling. The miniatures were built and painted by effects company Studio Gillis only to be composited against full screen projectors, which could get finsihed in front of smoke. The miniatures were filmed in Los Angeles due to the necessary stage space, crew and facilities.

The score includes pieces and cues that Perfume drew inspiration from scores such as Alien (scored by Jerry Goldsmith ), Aliens, scored By James Horner, and the tracks ‘Life’ & ‘ We Were Right all composed in Prometheus which were composed by Harry Gregson-Williams.

When early reviews indicated that the third act was splitting opinion, Disney created digital ads urging audiences to see it before anyone spoiled the ending. The marketing was blindsided by the power of an established brand, with that teaser trailer on March 20 collecting nearly 50 million views in its first day. Custom menu items and promotional xenomorph statues were introduced in partnership with cinemas, creating content that was widely shared.

This ones were also a mix of products as well, including a popcorn bucket (a theme that continues after Dune: Part Two [check out our popcorn bucket meme] and Deadpool & Wolverine earlier in the year. Alien: Romulus was initially slated for a Hulu debut but Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures pushed the film to theaters just ahead of production. Box office: In the United States and Canada, Alien: Romulus grossed $105.2 million as of October 13, 2024[update], and in other territories it grossed an additional $244.5 million for a worldwide total of $349.8 million That field is technically a record-holder in one respect, as the horror pic scored more global IMAX earning than any prior scary movie ($40m).

Alien: Romulus has received favorable reviews were given by critics. Alien: Romulus received a Most Anticipated Movie for the 2nd Half of 2024 nomination at the 7th Astra Midseason Movie Awards but lost to Joker: Folie à Deux.

Tie-in media

Marvel Comics will release a tie-in prequel comic book in October 2024, written by Zac Thompson and illustrated by Daniel Picciotto, bridging the events of Alien with Romulus. This one-shot is designed to reveal backstory for the alien encounter faced by Rain, Andy and their crew on a cannibalised spacecraft called Deteriorata when they set out from space station Renaissance with fresh water ten years ago.

Future

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter’s Brian Davids, Álvarez said he does have sequel concepts in his head for Romulus — but again didn’t want to jump the gun on anything considering a similar seven-year generation between Book II from its predecessor: “We tried really hard not [to plan sequels upfront], because I focus more about what is the story and if it needs another chapter, or people loves those characters so much they like them back. So we will see what the feedback is and if people actually demand it.

I mean, my thing is that — with exceptions like this because you can luck into one or unfortunately the audience doesn’t care what they were seeing and then they watch it on TV a lot. You’ve got to get away. You have to get the audience either way really wanting it. You know, so — Alien and Aliens, that’s seven years. But we certainly have a few thoughts on where it ought to be headed.
