The 4th of July weekend leads us into a very satisfying week of new content on Netflix, including the 2026 reboot of Little House on the Prairie (which has already been renewed for a second season). The streamer also has the critically acclaimed Hamnet, a cool-looking steampunk anime, and lots more to watch. Here are our top picks for this week.

This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks

Sparks of Tomorrow (July 5)

Set in an alternate past during Japan’s Meiji era, the world of Sparks of Tomorrow is totally reliant on steam power, with massive boilers constantly puffing away. When young inventor Kihachi can’t escape feeling that there’s a better way, he teams with a young sake brewer to discover the secrets of the mysterious 20th Century Electrical Catalog and change the world forever.

  • Stars: Sora Amamiya, Yuma Uchida
  • Genre: Animation
  • Rating: TV-14

Hamnet (July 6)

Chloe Zhao’s moving Hamnet, one of the biggest hits of the last awards season, hits Netflix this week. William Shakespeare was a fount of dramatic innovation, his plays stuffed to the gills with memorable characters and scenarios. In the film, we follow his courtship with his wife, Agnes (played by Jessie Buckley, who took home an Oscar for the role), and the death of his son, Hamnet, which strains their marriage even as it spurs him to greater artistic success. It’s a masterpiece.

  • Director: Chloe Zhao
  • Cast: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Zac Wishart
  • Genre: Drama
  • Rating: PG-13
  • IMDB Rating: 7.8/10

Little House on the Prairie (July 9)

I remember growing up on the 1980s TV adaptation of Little House on the Prairie. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s novels about a family growing up in the American Midwest in the late 1800s are absolute classics, melding deep historical detail with rich family drama and a well-rounded cast of characters. This new adaptation promises to bring the pioneering adventures of the Ingalls family to a new generation, and has already been renewed for a second season.

  • Director: Shinzo Katayama
  • Cast: Ryan Robbins, Rebecca Amzallag, Maclean Fish
  • Genre: Drama
  • Rating: TV-MA
